Just to get you started here's our first challenge !
We often find ourselves shouting at our children during the week, giving them orders, hurrying them on, getting them to bed etc.
So rather than simply shout - take a breath first !! Lower your tone and ask them calmly, that you need their help ! Start by saying ' I need you to help me to ........' or ' I need you to put on your coat, get into the car, go to bed ...etc'. Be patient, try it and let us know how you get on !

Great tip - must try this during the week with my niece who is staying with me at the moment - and who at 4 years of age is certainly a challenge.

Thanks for giving this a go - let us know how you get on. We always welcome as much feedback as possible !! Changing our own behaviour can often be as challenging as that of our children's but its amazing what a big difference small changes can make !! Good luck with your niece ! ;D

It definitely made a difference with my niece when I was with her on my own - but when her mother arrives to collect her - all hell breaks loose.

it is difficult when those around dont work together with discipline etc. I know my mums really bad at giving in to Charlotte when she asks for snacks before her tea etc, and it doesnt matter how many times I tell her she doesnt listen. Glad to hear it helped for you though - at least you know youve got some calm when your niece is around.

'Discipline' can be such a touchy subject with people! I prefer to use the term 'boundaries'! And so I think you are terrific 'workingmum' for setting them in your home! When clear and fair boundaries are set - everyone benefits, parent/s, and kid/s !

I like that word "boundaries!" I will use that, I did wonder whether to type "discipline" when replying to the post - so have learnt something new today - thanks

I like your advice "take a breath". It can make such a difference when your fuse is running short. Sometimes you may need to count to 10 but its amazing how you can get a clearer perspective on a troublesome situation. Great advice I must remember to use more often.
